Modern Mixtape Vol. 25 – Outside Looking In

/

Hello friends! I’m back with a new Fall/Winter 2018 mixtape for you! Excuse the back to back mixes, but it’s better to have extra music than not enough. Despite all of these grandiose ideas of having SO. MUCH. TIME. once all 3 children were in school, life has had other plans for me. Nevertheless, listening to music helps keep me sane whilst driving to and from school 12 times a day. This particular mix is one of my favorites in awhile. These songs magically fit together and even create an accidental story line. I love it when that happens!

I’m pretty sure I’ve listened to “Bite the Hand” by boygenius and “Pristine” by Snail Mail hundreds of times. Other standouts include Sharon Van Etten’s latest release, “Comeback Kid.” I have to be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of her past music, but I really like the energy behind this new song. Her voice has a PJ Harvey vibe, but the beat and drive are what really get me. It will be interesting to hear the rest of the album once it’s released. I’m also digging some of Mitski’s tracks from her 2018 album, “Be the Cowboy.” I recently heard an interview with her where she said she purposely tries to do the opposite of what fans tell her they like most about her songs. HA! Perhaps that is why she has such a unique sound? There’s something a little bit off in her music and that is exactly what catches my attention. (Please don’t change that, Mitski!)

The Beths, Rubblebucket, Jealous of the Birds, Yves Tumor, The Twilight Sad, and Houses are all new-to-me bands. I haven’t had time to dig further into their albums, but hope to in the future. Lastly, there are groups I am always keeping my eye on for new releases. These would be: Bob Moses, Wild Nothing, Death Cab, Beach House, The Breeders, Kurt Vile, Santigold and Wolf Alice.

I hope you enjoy this playlist as much as I do!

Modern Mixtape Vol. 23: Caught Up Inside

They say blogging is dead, but I’d like to think mine is just in a coma or battling some kind of chronic illness called busyness. I won’t bother making any false promises that 180360 will come back to life any time soon, even though I really want it to. Until then, I have a little Christmas gift for you — a new mixtape!

As always, I’ve picked my favorite alt-indie-electro tracks, most of which are new releases from the past few months of 2017. I don’t know if there’s an exact science to making mixes, but I spend a lot of time working on the flow and creating a kind of backstory to mine. This one goes through several emotions, so I hope you stick with it to the end. And turn the last song up LOUD!

As far as the bands go, I’m really digging the new ‘Antisocialites’ album from Alvvays. There are so many amazing songs on it! Sadly, I missed their tour this year. I also recently discovered Brooklyn band, Big Thief. The song I picked for the mix is a little different than the rest, but it kind of reminds me of Liz Phair, which is always a good thing! And of course, there are loads of bands that regularly make their way onto my compilations. Lastly, be sure to check out more from Japanese Breakfast and Beck’s latest album, Colors. +++

Happy Holidays and fingers crossed, I’ll be back in the New Year with a bunch of new photo and travel posts that I’ve half written.

Modern Mixtape Vol. 22: The Strangest Dream

Oh boy have I dropped the ball in terms of posting what I’d hoped to this summer. Alas, while there may be no time for me to sit at my computer right now, I can give you one thing… some new summer jams. And maybe that’s all you really need!

These songs are the alt-indie-electro soundtrack to Summer of 2017. Here you’ll find perennial favorites like Phoenix, Alt-J, Spoon, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Day Wave and London Grammar. I’ve also recently discovered a few new-to-me artists like Sir Sly (Cake meets Beck?), Slowdive (an English band from the 90’s that has recently reunited) and This is the Kit (amazing indie-folk group). I’ll definitely be checking them out more. And even though it doesn’t fit into the mix, I love the new Foo Fighters single, Run. And I can’t wait to hear more of Queens of the Stone Age’s upcoming album, Villains, due at the end of August. YEAAHHHH!

Happy listening!

Modern Mixtape Vol. 21: Good and Gone

If you’re in need of some new music to take you into the weekend, look no further. In spite of all that has been going on politically, I really feel that art and music always manage to thrive in the midst of chaos.

There have been loads of bands releasing fantastic new albums. I’ve compiled some of my favorites for you in this Spring ’17 music mix. I’m loving all of these songs, but some standouts are: Goldfrapp, Middle Kids, Violents & Monica Martin and Nine Pound Shadow.

You might also recognize a few bands from my prior mixes like: Grandaddy, Tennis, Spoon and Cherry Glazerr. They’re all so good…

Enjoy and hope to post some new photos soon!

Modern Mixtape Vol. 20: Down to the Sound

modmixvol20coverHello strangers! Thought I’d pop in with a little gift of music for the holidays. I know I always say this, but I really hope to find more time for this neglected space in the new year. (once my little monkey is in preschool!) Until then, here’s what I’ve been listening to recently…

Loving girl groups like Warpaint, Computer Magic, Maggie Rogers and of course, Angel Olsen. She’s got a spot-on Stevie Nicks vibe in the song I’ve shared. Jim James’Here in Spirit” is a new soulful find and Cass McCombs, “Bum Bum Bum” is super catchy. There are some perennial favorites like Bon Iver, Flaming Lips and Temples. Plus there’s some new to me finds like Beverly, Blood Orange and High Highs. Honestly, they’re all good songs — but more importantly, I can’t believe this is my 20th mix!

Sadly, I just learned that 8tracks is now charging for any listening beyond one hour a day. What a bummer! I’ll put this mix up there for now, but will be on the lookout for another free streaming service. Happy Holidays!
